Mortal Shell 2 FAQ: New Player Questions Answered
Starting Out
Is Mortal Shell 2 hard?
It's challenging but fair — the core systems (Harden, Parry, Resolve) are designed to reward patience. It's more approachable than it looks if you learn to Harden and time your parries.
What Shell should I start with?
Proxima is the recommended starter — hook pull into Lightning finisher, plus a damage-shrug passive. Very forgiving for learning. See the Shell tier list.
What's the best starting weapon?
Your first weapon is fine to finish the game with. For a power pick, the Axe and Dagger is the top all-rounder. See the weapon tier list.
Core Mechanics
What is Gloom?
Gloom is the game's XP/currency. You spend it to level the Harbinger and upgrade Shell points — it's not used for weapon upgrades (that's Tarforge materials).
What is Resolve?
Resolve is the meter that powers your Shell abilities and your Sidearms. Budget it like a shared resource — don't dump it all into shots.
What are Tarstones?
Equippable stones adding passives or actives to weapon, sidearm and Shell. You can equip 10 at once: 4 Support (Shell-compatible) + 2 each for Combat, Infusion, Ability. See Tarstone types.
Do I need a Shield?
No — defense works through Harden (turn to stone) and Parry. The 4 Seals (Guard / Harden / Parry / Slayer) replace shields.
Progression & Endgame
How does New Game+ work?
Choosing Send Ova after the final boss rolls you into NG+. You'll want NG+ and NG++ for the Shell Memories (you can't get enough Glimpses in one run). See endings.
Can I miss anything permanently?
On current versions, almost nothing — you can sweep collectibles in free roam after the final boss. The real traps are 2 tutorial trophies and Peter's Perfect Parry. See missables.
Should I use all my upgrade materials?
Yes — upgrades scale identically at the Tarforge, so you can't ruin a weapon. Commit to one weapon and max it, then branch out.
